Be Conscious

It’s always possible for a higher level of consciousness to infuse our experience in any moment.

Say that you’re disappointed by something that someone says or does. You can stew in the story of what happened, or you can bring kindness to the pain you feel.

Stewing in the story keeps you stuck and separate. And being kind to your emotions is more spacious and less stressful. You’re letting consciousness in by being aware of your in-the-moment experience—instead of being lost in the story.

I’ve noticed a lot of people complaining recently, and it strikes me that they are totally caught in their stories. Someone was complaining about getting parking tickets, and I thought to myself, “This suffering is so unnecessary.”

Read the signs and follow the rules, and like magic, you’ve freed yourself from getting tickets and the need to complain about them. And there’s no more room for enjoyment, presence, and peace.

This is everyday awakening. In any moment, we can relax away from our ideas about things, and let consciousness in. We can drop the drama and the belief that we’re right so we can see clearly how life is actually unfolding.

And when we’re conscious, the peaceful choice is readily available.

Many people think that awakening is infinite bliss and fantastic experiences of oneness. Yes, that can happen, but that doesn’t deny the fact of the miracle of your everyday human life.

This is where the spiritual rubber meets the road. It’s where you get to live being moved by consciousness and not by the limited ideas of the personal self.

It's where the ordinary is known to be extraordinary without the filter of the mind.

You see the uselessness of negative and critical thoughts, and you don’t give them power.

You stop being self-absorbed, which leaves so much space for empathy, compassion, kindness, understanding, and fun!

How to let consciousness infuse the moments of your life? Relax. Stop efforting. And trust the greater intelligence of life beyond your personal mind.
